Hello Oppo, I’m supposed to be working on a report on autonomous cars for one of my university courses, however oppo is distracting me. So I was wondering what you guys think of autonomous cars? I mean I think it would be kind of nice on the highway, do you guys agree?

Here is a Google Koala for your time

I do not like the idea that ALL cars be autonomous but I’m happy that some people will have them. It should make the roads much more predictable than they are now. It would also be nice to use on long trips if you get tired. Don’t want to get a hotel? Just let the car keep driving while you sleep.

I think they’re a great idea. I could go out and drink and have my car drive me home. Or for road trips, daily commutes, etc.

I’d still want a car to drive of course.

Meh...

I love driving, as do most of us...so the second anyone suggests banning human-driven cars I will raise hell. That being said, I’m fine with the idea of having them on the market. The biggest upside to me is that it should make traffic around me far more predictable.

Anybody who’s driven through Nebraska knows that they can’t get here soon enough. But no matter what I still must have the option of being able to drive myself.

Banning human-driven cars will go against my personal pursuit of happiness, and I will have none of it.

It’s a great idea that’s much farther from reality than people realize

Road trips and traffic jams will be the best part of autonomous driving.

If they don’t call that car the Koala, I’ll whine and cry and complain on the internet forever. Forever.

It would be fine for other people. However, my view on autonomous cars is that at some point in the future (I see this as a lot sooner than most) those who want to drive will not be allowed to do so.

Autonomous driving would be okay for two things that I see: a ‘stuck in traffic jam’ mode or ‘boring open interstate mode’ once they work the bugs out of it. I don’t know if I’d ever trust it to bring me down a tightly winding road. However, I’m decades from accepting it or wanting to be next to something else using it.

The demo of Tesla’s system was intriguing, but I’m still not okay with it unless there is a ‘driver release’ option that’s very easily triggered to give full control back to the driver. I say that even realizing that there are active avoidance systems and lane correction systems in use today that work faster and better than a human can react to something. I’m still not a fan.

I reckon the killer app for autonomous cars will be when they come with a loo on board. Driving in traffic isn’t that much of a chore, but being able to commute to work while having a crap, or a shower, that’s a major step forwards.

One of my colleagues visited the Kia proving grounds earlier this month to check out the autonomous Soul EV. He says Kia’s pretty frank about the advancements they’ve made compared to what still needs to be done.

The best aspect is driving baby boomers to dr appointments and such when they can no longer drive themselves. Public transportation is not good enough in most of the country.

Here is a perspective on autonomous cars I wrote awhile back that may be helpful to you -

Meh, I’ll be fine with them when they get good...thing is, that’s way further over the horizon than the optimists posit. We’ll have some fancy cruise control in the short term, but ‘punch in address and it goes to destination in all conditions’ is many decades if not lifetimes away. I’d be shocked if the requirement for licensed human pilots go extinct while I can still drive.

One thing that needs to be brought up more in these conversations is that need to be incredibly safe. The proponents like to compare the safety and error rate to that of an ‘average driver’. That’s a BS comparison. In order to adopt them on a wide scale they need to be safer than the safest driver. If they’re merely better than average you’re asking the most responsible/safest/conscientious drivers to put themselves at greater peril in order to get a safety statistics bump for the least responsible. That’s a nonsense central planning style argument which shouldn't be accepted as readily as most authors seem to.

Autonomous cars won’t be cool until they can do this.

OK, I’ll be at least a little bit helpful. We had a couple of opinion pieces on autonomous cars over at Right Foot Down recently. I wrote one of them.

I would bet when they do become practical, legal, and available, regulations will almost certainly require a human driver to be in the car and ready to take over. Planes can take off, navigate, and land using advanced auto pilots, but we don’t let them fly passengers around without humans in the cockpit.

Using your car as a designated driver? I think that would be frowned upon. It also would negate one of the best theoretical uses of an autonomous vehicle, the ability to drop you off and go park somewhere else. How nice would that be in urban settings? A built in valet you don’t have to tip!

I won’t lie, I am absolutely in love with the idea of driverless cars. Whe I am bored I am not the greatest driver, this is probably roughly 85% of the time due to commuting. If I could sleep during my commute, on the way back from my lady friend’s house late at night, and on my way home from work life would be way better. Another thing, I love driving on back roads however it would be amazing to be able to set the car to drive so I could pay more attention to my surroundings. I love spotting old car sitting around and random stuff.

“KITT, Turbo Boost!” (car flies over obstacle)

As corny as it was, I loved this show. Too bad the reboot of it was so sucky.

It truly was. As a diehard fan of the original even I gave up on the reboot.
